The top five counties in the US ranked by nonprofit assets have charitable organizations totaling more than $1 trillion in assets and also include the major cities and surrounding suburbs of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and Boston. Several of these counties are also home to many wealthy families, corporations, and institutions that control philanthropic foundations, endowments, and many other types of 501c organizations.
County searches are very effective for including multiple local areas in one list and then drilling down into that list by town, city, zip code, 501c classification, etc. Many organizations known for being located in a specific city might technically be located in an adjacent town that is also in the same county. These kinds of search is also very useful for job seekers interested in working for a nonprofit and are open to expanding the search outside of their zip code or city and into neighboring towns. It's also a great way to find churches, hospitals, and any other kind of nonprofit within the county radius especially if you are looking to give or receive charitable aid, volunteer, or join an association like sports leagues, boy scouts, business and civic leagues, and more.
The table below lists the top twenty-five counties in the US ranked by nonprofit assets. You can click on the column headers to sort the data or use the filter box to quickly find a county. Click on any row to view and download the list of nonprofit organizations located in that county.
